Join The 3AM Teacher, the Reading Olympians, and over 80 SUPREME education bloggers as we take you through a tour of the Reading Olympians Root Study Program!!

I was so excited to try this program out.  As I study the new common core standards coming our way in California, I can see how learning root words, prefixes and suffixes are important.  SInce this was new and out of the normal routine for my firsties, I decided to focus on the prefix re-.  We read a printed book provided in the program and practiced making new words with re- infront of it.  Here is one of the practice pages we did with the activity.

After we completed the practice page, I decided to integrate it into something we are beginning to learn about and that is recycling!  Well, how convenient is reduce, reuse and recycle when learning about the re- prefix!  We focused on reuse.  We talked about how we can reuse a shoe box.  We wrote and illustrated sentences about reusing a showbox.  They turned out very cute.

My kids definitely can tell you that the prefix re- means again.  I am excited to continue teaching them more prefixes and suffixes!
