Meet Melissa, a first grade teacher from First Grade Smiles.
How long have you been teaching?
What do you like most about teaching?
This is my first year teaching 1st grade and the students make me smile and laugh more than I ever expected. Even on the most trying days, just when I'm frustrated or tired, they do something innocent and adorable and I just laugh out loud and my whole day is turned around. That is my favorite thing about teaching!
What has been most challenging for you as a teacher?
When I taught 3rd grade, the most challenging thing was to prepare those students for state tests that were going to take a total of more than 6 hours when they were all done. To watch some students who weren't reading on grade level look at the test in front of them with such a defeated look was so sad. I like it when my students can feel a sense of pride and success in what they are doing, not reminders of what they cannot do so well.
What do you like to do for fun when you are not teaching?
I love spending time with my two little girls and my husband. We enjoy going to our camp in the Adirondacks, playing outside, or just snuggling on the couch.
What is your favorite children's book?
There are SO many to choose from. I really love Thank You Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco. I get choked up reading it aloud every time.
Share a random fact about you.
I really wish I had a maid to clean my house everyday. With two small children (and a husband), not to mention all of my teaching stuff all over the place, things get cluttered REALLY fast. I could spend a whole Saturday cleaning the house and after dinner it will look just like it did that morning. *sigh*
