Blubber Fun!

We have been having so much fun learning about penguin characteristics and how they adapt to their environment.  One thing I love to do each year is the blubber experiment.  This year I decided to add temperature measurement into the mix.  I work at a k-8 school, so we have a middle school science teacher.  He loaned me some great thermometers.  We started off by talking about temperature.  I had to try and explain Celsius to a first grader since the thermometers only had Celsius readings.  We were comparing water directly from the sink, ice water, and ice water with blubber.

Here was the bag of blubber before I put it in the ice water.

The kids loved sticking their hands in each bag to feel the differences.  After we felt them, we read the temperature of each one and recorded on a sheet I made.

This was a great visual for them to see how the temperature with the blubber was the same as the regular water.  There were were a lot of "aha" looks on their faces!

I hope you enjoy the rest of your week. Check back tomorrow for the Friday Teacher Feature.  In the meantime, I posted a new Groundhog's Day FREEBIE!  Click the picture below. Enjoy.
